In a world increasingly threatened by the environmental crisis, the isolation of remote areas, and the disconnection of young people from nature, the project “Innia’s Green Adventure: Pioneering Sustainability Through Outdoor Activities” seeks to address these challenges. It aligns with European Union policies by promoting the sustainable management of natural resources, climate action, and the economic revitalization of remote communities, including the expansion of employment opportunities.
Appreciating the environmental significance and natural beauty of the remote community of Innia, the team recognizes the immense potential for sustainable, eco-friendly tourism. By utilizing nature sports such as rock climbing, hiking, mountain biking, orienteering, and trail running, the team developed “Innia’s Green Adventure” as a strategic initiative. This project aims to bridge the gap between youth and the environment while fostering a resilient, green economy within the region. Specifically, the project aims to:
- to enhance sustainability of the community of Innia through outdoor sports such as climbing, hiking, orienteering, trail running, cycling, etc.;
- the revitalization of the rural community of Innia through the participation of youth in sports activities in the village and in the natural environment;
- the active involvement of young people with training and expertise in outdoor sports for social contribution and solidarity;
- the utilization of natural resources for the development of equal opportunities for employment and employability;
- to cultivate a culture of protecting the natural environment of the Akama Peninsula through interaction with nature;
- to support and strengthening of local micro-enterprises;
- to promote dialogue on social and labor problems in remote areas between policy makers and experts to exchange and create innovative proposals and actions through thematic groups and training actions.
Throughout the implementation of “Innia’s Green Adventure: Pioneering Sustainability Through Outdoor Activities,” the project team, in collaboration with experienced outdoor professionals aged 25–35, will oversee the planning and execution of diverse activities within the Innia rock climbing area, the village center, and the protected Akamas Peninsula.
In detail, the project team is going to organize and involve participants from different social and age groups and categories in: theoretical and practical workshops in sports such as climbing, orienteering, mountain biking and trail running, participation in hikings, thematic routes, tours, discussions with locals, getting to know local micro-entreprises, participation in the Cyprus Rock Climbing Festival, movie nights, presentations on environmental issues, slackline workshops, games in nature, cleaning campaigns, treasure hunts, museum visits etc. Also, the project team will create and maintain the official website of the project.
During dialogues with local authorities, the team will propose a strategic roadmap to increase Innia’s visibility and hospitality capacity. The goal is to create more opportunities for visitors to explore the community, participate in outdoor sports, and enjoy the unique natural landscape, ultimately encouraging longer stays that support the local economy.
